CafeMom takes the security and privacy of CafeMom members very seriously. That's why we provide a comprehensive set of privacy controls that put you in charge of your information.

The Internet

The amount of information you share on the internet is completely up to you. It's important to remember that the internet is a very public place! On most sites, information that you post or make available is available for anyone else on the internet to see.

Keep It All in Perspective

Imagine you are in your local supermarket with your child in a stroller. If someone who you don't know walked up to you and asked your child's name, would you tell that person? If you would, that person knows roughly where you live, what your child looks like, and what their name is. If that sounds scary to you, then you should think about what information you share with people in real-life as well as on CafeMom and the internet. Think about real-world things that are similar to what you are doing on the internet to help you make decisions about what to keep private and what to share.

Security and Privacy on CafeMom

On CafeMom, you control the privacy of almost everything you add to CafeMom. There are privacy settings so you can decide what information you want to be public, and what information you want to keep private or just between your CafeMom friends.

Below are explanations of the privacy controls available on CafeMom. If you have any questions, please contact the CafeMom Team.

Your Screen name, avatar, thought bubble, chatterbox and mood: There are a few CafeMom features that are ALWAYS public. They are: Your CafeMom screen name, avatar, thought bubble, chatterbox, and mood. Keep this in mind and choose a screen name and avatar that you are comfortable with anyone on the internet seeing. Your chatterbox remains public as if you chatterbox someone, they need to be able to write you back.

The privacy of everything else you put on CafeMom can be controlled by using the Privacy Controls available for that CafeMom feature.

Your Profile Page and Profile Information: The privacy settings for the information on these pages can be changed at

Journal Posts and Photos: Each time you post a new Journal post or photo, there is a drop-down menu where you can select who can see these. You must select a privacy setting for each post and photo.

Private Messages: These are always private between you and the recipient.

Groups: The privacy of a group, and of your posts and photos within a group is set by the owner of each group. That means that your photos and posts in that group are either public or private depending on the setting of the group. You can ask group owners what the privacy settings are on groups you belong to. If you do not like the privacy settings of the group, you may want to consider either not posting in the group or starting your own group with different privacy settings.

You can control whether the groups you belong to will show up on your profile page. The controls for this setting are at

Widgets: Every widget that you have on your profile page can have its privacy controlled. Click the "Edit" button at the top-right of the widget and you can control who sees that widget. This is particularly useful for controlling who can see information about your children, or your photos.

The CafeMom Team

In addition to what you can control, we have a team of people dedicated to searching for problems on CafeMom and deleting users, posts, photos, messages, and anything else that does not abide by our Community Guidelines and/or Terms of Service. We try our best to make CafeMom a safe place, but security is everyone's responsibility! Take charge of your own privacy and security.

Search Engines

Google, Yahoo, and many other search engines will "index" what they find on sites all over the internet, including CafeMom. This is a great thing as many moms who don't know about CafeMom will search on Google and find their answers here.

If you do not want your profile, post, photo, etc. found through a search engine, set your privacy controls for that particular item to "CafeMom Members Only", "Friends Only" or "Private". That way, it will not show up on search engines, ever.

Private messages will never show up in search engine results.

With your posts and photos in groups on CafeMom, each group owner decides the overall privacy of the group. You can check with the group owners of groups you belong to, to see whether what you post there is visible on a search engine.

Sharing Your Information With Others

When communicating directly with other members on CafeMom, only share information you are comfortable with a stranger knowing. Avoid sharing information that would make it easy for a stranger to find you (such as your and your children's first and last names, address, telephone number, place of work, or school). Never share your social security number or credit card number.

Buying, Selling and Charities

You may decide to buy or sell something or donate to a charity you heard about from someone on CafeMom. That is your decision. CafeMom does not get involved with buying and selling and will not get involved in any disputes resulting in missing money or goods. Be careful who you send money to. Do your research to make sure the charity or individual is legitimate.
