Do you know of a good family vacation spot in the midwest?

My husband and I are trying to come up with a plan for a summer vacation now that the kids are a little older. This summer they'll be 3, 5, and 6 years old. Do you know of any good family vacation spots in the midwest....we live in northern Illinois.

We've done the Wisconsin Dells thing a couple times already and are looking for something a little further away.

  • Try Santa Claus, Indiana. Holiday World and Splashin Safari are located there. Holiday World is a wonderful amusement park and Splashin Safari is the waterpark that is also a lot of fun. If you enjoy camping, there is a great campground next door to the parks called Lake Rudolph. There are other nearby places to stay if camping isn't your thing. My family loves going there for vacation. I don't think you'd be disappointed. The town of Santa Claus is small, but there is a nearby drive-in theater that we have been to twice and there are some Abe Lincoln things close by although I haven't been to them before. Evansville IN is close and I just read that they have a zoo and children's museum which would give you some other options. The websites for some of the places are and

  • Try these Gaitlinberg TN
KY also has some nice places if you like to camp or see caves. You can look into Carter County Ky or near it they have a nice area there but I dont remember the name exactly. They have a lake, boats, stuff like that.
You can also go to Fredericksburg VA. My mom lives near there and its nice we took the kids last summer to all the historic sites like old frederickburg & the civil warn battlefields. About 30 min from there is an amusement park named Kings Dominion.

  • Michigan Adveture in Muskegon. has a great travel website! The state parks around lake Michigan are beautiful. the sand sings! There is an old ww2 submarine you can actualy go on! It all depends on what you like to do. we live rural so we seekout cities and excitement. It also depends on how much you want to spend. And what kind of accomadations you like. Silver Lake sand dunes is cool. You can rent dune buggies!!!

  • My family and I went to Starved Rock about 2 years ago. (Actually went the weekend I signed up to Cafemom! lol) and we had a blast! They have an indoor water park in the main hotel. There are townhomes behind it that you can also rent out. They also have an indoor amusement park. It is really fun, and my son had a blast! The townhome was a two bedroom- with one room having a hottub in it. Plus, they have a bus that drives around and will take you to and from each building, so you don't have to worry about packing the kids into the car. The place is called Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort and the website is: I hope you have fun where ever you choose to go!

  • I know its not like some great vacation destination, but try Omaha, Nebraska. We were there for a while when my boys were younger, and we had a blast there. Here's some info on what there is to do:

    Omaha children's museum:
Henry Doorly zoo: (world's largest indoor rain forest, great aquarium--excellent full day trip!)
    Coco Key water resort:

    That's just a few things!
