homemade ketchup

Has anyone made some and how did it turn out. We use a fair bit of ketchup in out house and I've looked at some recipes on line for one's with less sugar and salt.
What has been your experience?

  • This recipe is from a South Beach cookbook:

    1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
    3/4 c tomato paste
    2 tablespoons sugar substitute (Splenda)
    2 teaspoons onion powder
    2 teaspoons light soy sauce
    1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
    1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
    1 1/2 tablespoons malt vinegar

    In a large pot over medium heat, combine all ingredients and let simmer for 5 minutes. Refrigerate until serving. (Keeps covered in refrigerator for 1 week).

    Makes about 1 cup.

    Nutrition: 45 calories, 0 fat, sat fat. 2 g protein, 10 g carbs, 2 g fiber, 0 cholesterol, 390 mg sodium.

    I made this when I was on this diet. I thought it turned out fine.
