A girl is a "woman" when she has her first period, according to many states. When would a boy be considered a "man"?

Would it be when he has his first erection?

  • Huh? States don't consider a girl a woman until she is 18. Same with boys. Boys get erections as babies so that wouldn't make any sense on a number of levels.

  • In what country? None of the US states define "womanhood".

If they did it certainly wouldn't be indicated by a first period, it would be indicated by a physical age.

  • I've seen cultures determine woman on menses but certainly not states. I'm skeptical.

  • Site your source. But in all states - both males and females aren't considered adults until 18. This has nothing to do with menstrual cycles or erections.

  • That was what I was going to say...but I find that a bit ridiculous. Lots of girls are having their first period at between 10-12, that is not a woman by any means! I didn't have mine until after I was 15, and I was still not even close to a "woman".

  • 18 is considered adult. Anything under 18 is considered a minor. I'd be damned if states actually defined personhood like that.

  • I would hardly consider a 9 year old girl a women just because she got her period. In which states in this true?

  • I do not care what I sound like a minor child should not be able to walk into a clinic and have an abortion without parental knowledge.ESP a friggin 12 yr old!

  • Never heard of that. I think a boy is a man, and a girl is a woman when they don't have to rely on anyone to take care of them, and they are completely independent in every way.
