lanlord question... what do you think?

i rent from a very old fasion farmer ( women home taken care of kids men work typt) so we dont get along but he likes dh. anyways a week before x mas my stove heating element died. it took lanlord 6 days to call someone when some one finnally showed up after x mas he had to order part so we have been with out an oven now for about a month. now everyone says why are you still paying rent put it in an escrow account till its fixed. now it takes my lanlord forever to fix things 6 days to fix a burst pipe under my sink so no sink for 6 1/2 days heck it took me 3 month to get him to say i can get blinds for the windows and take it off rent. ( they were broken when we moved in here ) so only had 2 good blinds the rest of the 10 windows nothing. hes very money hungry and will do anything to make a dollar. so me and dh argue about rent what do u think or what would you do? we skillet everything right now would love a roast lol.

  • You can't withold rent fo repairs. you have to give written notice and then do a demand letter...check out the landlord tenant site in your state.

  • What state do you live in? There's certain processes you have to follow or you could be evicted.

  • Check your county on renters rights. Usually they do have an account that you can put your rent money in. As for things around the house not being fixed. Pay for them on your own, save the receipts and deduct it from your rent. That is allowed.

  • Sounds like our old landlord. It always took him forever to do anything. You should look into the housing laws before you do anything. Some places allow you to legally withhold rent until a problem is fixed. On the other hand, if you already don't get along very well, that will probably just make it worse.

  • You can't just get things fixed and deduct it from the rent either...don't listen to anon. You have to follow a certain process

  • dont get me wrong he is still getting his rent every week. i read the tenet thing and it says 48 hours to make a repair. eaither 48 or 72 cant remember right now. this man has stated were the best tenents hes ever had we pay rent on time every week lol. and we keep to our selfs. i just dont know why it takes him soooo long to fix something. if i were a landlord i would make sure things get repaired asap. i want to keep good tenents... but everyone is saying put rent in an account and im at a loss. i just want my oven its been a month. xmas eve dinner was ruined because we had no oven and 15 people coming over. it was horrible. thank god thats over..

  • put the roast in the crock pot. (not that it will solve the oven problem, but it will solve the roast part.) other than that, i would just keep sending a note with the rent making sure that he knows that the oven is still out. or ask him if you can borrow his oven to bake something, if he says yes, make sure you bake something everyday till he gets it fixed.
