What is good for a child 5 yrs old who has a sore throat, tonsils are swollen and she tested negative for Strep. Any meds?

My daughter has a sore throat, with her tonsils are swollen up with black and white spots. She went to the dr and just got a strep throat test done--which came back negative. Anything I can do to help her with the pain. ??

  • I'd offer her popsicles, icecream, frozen juice, crushed ice, warm lemon water with honey in it, chamomile tea, tylenol . . . etc.

  • I forgot to add, swishing with salt water. Does she know how to gargle? Gargeling with salt water is supposed to help too.

  • Childrens Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Chloroseptic throat spray works well too. Also frozen juice bars, ice cream, sherbet, crushed ice, as well as warm drinks such as hot(warm)tea, hot chocolate, and hot lemon and honey water. You can also but some Vicks vapor rub on his or her neck at night and by morning the sore throat will be gone.

  • That sounds aweful! Try some Ibuprofen- it will take the swelling down, reduce fever, and help with the pain. It really works great. I use it religiously in my whole household. Also, maybe get a second opinion. Did they rule out infection? Maybe some antibiotics would help... Also, for quick relief, sore throat spray works good, it is just nasty. I agree with the suggestion someone made for Vicks. That always helps a lot. I wish you all the best. You are in my prayers.

  • No medicine! Just honey/lemon or gargle with warm salt water. I hope she gets better soon!

  • If it's hard for her to swallow, ask your Pharmacist for FEVER-ALL. It's made by Tylenol and it's a suppository. It works wonders. Give her lots of icees, popsicles and chloraseptic throat spray. I'd take her to an ENT to make sure it's not tonsilitis.
