Does anybody know how hotels Charge?

We're going to Vegas in March and I was wondering how Hotels charge when you reserve a room.

Do they charge your credit card right when you call and make the reservation? Or do they charge your card when you check in?

THANKS!

  • I think they just use your card number to hold the reservation for you and they charge you when you check out. However i believe if you don't check in and you made a reservation they might charge a fee (why they take your card number) because they'd be losing business..

  • what they do is they run an amount to verify that your card will cover any charges for the room.
This $ does not actually come out of your account/charge to your credit card yet.
After you stay at the hotel, they charge the $ to your card.

some banks & credit cards do have a Hold that authorizations are placed on though. This means that the $ will appear out of your balance but it hasn't actually been taken anywhere. It will be released from hold usually within 24 hours and the $ will be back in your account.

after the hotel runs this authorization through, it means that if at anytime they wish to actually take the money they can. such as most hotel's policy on 24 hour cancelation. If you call 12 hours ahead to try to cancel, they will still charge the card you gave them for the reservation because it was already "authorized" when they verified the card was good.

    make sense?

  • Some places take a deposit but not a whole lots. and some places make you pay when you book, also sometimes they just do an authorization to make sure you have the money and then you pay when you get there... There are a few different ways hotel, motels, loges do it.. they are all different. I work at a lodge and we just take the card to hold the room. So good luck!

  • The reason I ask is because we would like to book now, but wont have the money until about 2 weeks before we go.
But it looks like we will be charging it to a credit card then paying it off after the $ comes in! lol

  • You need to clarify when you make the reservation. Each place is different and if you don't have the funds now, you need to be sure they don't charge your card till you check in. Some places will allow you to pay at the time of reservation because you can lock in your rate then; if you wait to pay till you check in, then the room rate may be higher.
