Is it true that HD tvs will erase or damage VCR tapes because of the magnetic field?

We're looking into replacing our old dinosaur tv and a salesman at a store the other day said that HD tvs will erase or damage VCR tapes. Is this true or was he just trying to get us to buy a certain model and scare us away from another one that is HD?

  • And just HOW does this happen? Did the salesperson explain to you why that happens or what could possibly cause it other then it being an HD tv?

  • I googled your question. There was forum where someone asked this same question because there was a warning that came with their TV. This TV contains a strong magnet in the speaker unit that generates a magnetic field. Keep any items susceptible to magnetic fields away from the speaker. Replies to the poster said that VCR can be damaged by ANY magnetic field, but so can dust, humidity, etc. That don't store the tapes near the speakers and convert them to digital format ASAP. If they can't be converted then simply store them somewhere else.
