If my two year old is vaccinated can he still pass something to his younger brother who isn't?

Our doctor told us that if our 2 year old is exposed to something at preschool, he may not get it, because he's vaccinated, but he can still pass it to someone. It doesn't sound right to me. Anyone know?

  • That sounds right. People can "carry" something home. Just like Johnny could bring something home from work or the grocery store.

  • So, if he is exposed to the chicken pox, but doesn't get them because he's vaccinated (or he's had them before), he can still give them to someone?

  • Vaccinations shed for about 21 days after the injection. Several vaxxs carry live viruses--yes, he could pass this on to anyone. Please keep in mind that vaccination does NOT mean immunity.

  • All the vaccination does is trigger your body to develop antibodies against a particular "bug" in advance so that your immune system will be prepared for it when exposed to that "bug". When you are exposed to the "bug", you may not get sick from it because you've been vaccinated, but that doesn't mean that you don't still have the "bug" in your system (as a carrier), and you can still pass it on to someone vulnerable to the infection.

  • Yep. Mom2aspclboy is right. The vaccine gives his body a huge jump start to fight the bug. But he is still infected (even though he may not ever seem sick) and can still pass it to others.

  • Yep, all ours are vaxed. Our older 2 had both their chicken pox vax but oldest got a mild case and passed it on to the baby.
