Breastfeeding?

I recently brought home the baby I am adopting. She is a little over a week old and a friend suggested that, since my boobs would swell and hurt every time she would give a hunger cry, I should put Molly to my breast and let her latch on to my nipples. I've been doing it over the past couple of few days and I think that I am getting milk. They are swollen like they were with my first child and it isn't getting better when after she's had a bottle. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • It is possible to lactate for an adopted child but my understanding was it is rather difficult. I would guess it is not impossible. If you are comfortable trying then I see nothing wrong with it at all.

  • If you're interested in breastfeeding, you should look into an SNS breastfeeding system. You can latch her on while feeding her formula at the same time and it will help stimulate your own milk production. You can get one from Medela.

  • That's what I have been doing, letting her latch on while I'm feeding her. I think she's getting something. She's holding on and it's hard to get her off the booby. I think she's getting some milk.

  • Sounds like you're on the right track. I'd keep doing what you are doing. Pump in between too, if you can, and use an SNS if you can. Get support, from an IBCLC, and LLL. I'd bet you could end up EBF if you wanted to.
