Anyone celebrate Chinese New Year?

My son wants to celebrate this year because he learned about it in school. He wants us to make red lanterns and sweep out the bad luck. :0) What other typical things do you do for Chinese New Year? Is there a special meal? Should we just go out for Chinese?

  • I do know that it's traditional to give a little red envelope with money in it. We have a store here that sells the envelopes and you can pick up Chinese money as well. (I think it's something like $8 for the envelope and coin.)

You could try making dumplings. I know the Nick Jr. show Ni Hao KaiLan has an episode about Chinese New Year and consequently, if you watch Nick Jr. in, I guess it would be January this year, they'll be running a bunch of little snippets about it.

  • Is there a "chinatown" near you where you can go to one of the parades? There are also some great things for Chinese New Year on Oriental Trading Company's website that might give you some inspiration. Or perhaps you can be lazy and get him some books and let him pick what he wants to make and celebrate.
