Anyone have a garbage disposal problem, where sand like grit, gunk came out of your sink?

It looks like sand, but it's not sand,it's sorta gritty but it's a light grey brown color. What is it and why is the sink acting this way?

  • Is it coming up into the sink? Your sink may be backed up. The gunk sounds like old food particles that have been trapped in the pipes and has started to decay. Sometimes when the food is ground up some of it can stick to grease or anything else that has gone down the sink. Try dumping baking soda and lemon juice down the drain. let it sit for like 10 minutes and then rinse with hot water.

  • it could be your washer backing into your sink. my inlaws had a clog somewhere deep under the house that caused the washer to back up, bringing sand and other gunk into the sink.

  • Sounds like the pipes have become overloaded with old grindings from the disposal and it's backing up. Hopefully that's all it is, and not a clog somewhere further down the line.

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda in the disposal, then add juice from a whole lemon or two. Wait ten minutes, then pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Wait 30 minutes then repeat, running the disposal the second time.

If you still have problems after that you will want to call a drain guy. If you're in the San Diego area, let me know...I have a GREAT drain guy and he never over-charges!!
