  • The most important thing about being on a plane with baby is to maintain your calm! They really key into your emotions and by being calm and nonchalant about the whole thing, rather than worried and uptight, they will follow your lead. We've tried to schedule flights during naptime, so that our daughter would be asleep for part of the flight. When awake, we eat snacks (lots of different kinds of finger foods), read books, play with things found in the back of the seat in front of us (my daughter is fascinated by the safety cards and inflight magazines). At 8 mo, she loved playing with the plastic cups from our drinks, shredding napkins (someone else gets to clean up!), and walking up and down the aisle (she'd walk, I'd hold her hands). CON'T

  • I never mind diaper changes on the plane because the trip to the bathroom and back takes up time. Bring lots of diapers and wipes on the plane, and at least 2 extra outfits. Bring a few favorite toys. Get an lightweight umbrella stroller to gate check. You don't need to bring many extra outfits if you can do laundry at your relative's.

  • Carry baby in carrier or sling and pack as little as possible. Do a search online for baby rental places at destination. You can rent cribs, pack and plays, car seats, strollers, etc and they wil deliver it to you when you arrive. Some will even bring you diapers and wipes. Your carryon should have at least a whole days worth of baby supplies, pack more than you think you'll need for that travelling portion of the trip. Bring sippy cup or bottle to keep ears from popping durin take-off.
