how many times should i give my soon to be 5 mth old cereal?

i started to give my son cereal in a bowl 1 a day. but im wanting to increase it to maybe twice a day. with the cereal i give him water or half and half of juice or sometimes formula. hes still wanting to feed every 4 to 5 hours. should he be on a schedule when it comes to cereal in a bowl or is it ok. when should he start eating once in the am, once for lunch and then dinner?

  • We started with cereal for breakfast, then when it came time for another meal, we introduced the stage 1 gerbers. We started adding them at lunch at around 5 months, then gave him dinners at around 6 months. Now (because of daycare) our 8 month old eats 4 times a day (breakfast.lunch, snack, dinner) and then he gets a large bottle for bed.

  • Mine gets one feeding of cereal at night. We start his bedtime routine with it. He gets cereal, bath, teeth brushed, book, calm time in his crib, a bottle, and then bed!

  • When I started cereal (between 4-5 months) my doc said to do one table spoon twice a day. I do it at 10 am and 6 or 7 pm.

  • u could start that now if u want, keep an eye on how he goes poop, just to make sure he isnt going to have a hard time with it.... but my son started eating 1 in the morning and 1 for lunch and 1 for dinner when he was 4 months and he did fine..... if he has trouble going poop just add some apple sauce in with it and it will help him out alot

  • First of all.. WHY would you give him water, juice or half and half??!! Thats terrible...Babies that young ONLY need breastmilk or formula....His digestive system in too immature for all that crap and youre starting a bad habit by giving him juice this young. Hes going to want it when he gets older and youre headed for dental problems bigtime with him. And half and half? Yuk! Just give him formula til hes 6 months old and then sloooowly start adding in cereal or rice. But cereal and rice are just empty calories anyway.

  • 4-5 hours is not bad. really it isn't especially at 5 months. Cereal and solids are not meant as replacements for formula or breastmilk during the first year, they are for experiment and fun.
