3 Bumps

My 6.5 year old has a fever of 103.9

I gave her fever reducer to see if it comes down then I was going to take her temp again at 8, but she is already back asleep. She isn't wanting to eat which is fine I understand that since she don't feel good, but she wont get out of bed. She says her belly hurts. She complains of her belly hurting a lot. She started complaining last night, but this morning said she was fine then soon as she came home told me her belly hurt (I think she wasn't wanting to miss school with being her first day back) so she went up and fell asleep at about 330 she woke up at 7 for a few minutes and fell back to sleep. I took her temp it said it was 103.9 so I took it again to make sure it was right it said 103.6 then took it one last time and it said 103.8. She hasn't ever had a temp above 102.0. I tried to see if she would take a cook bath to get the fever down, but she doesn't want one so I didn't force her. Then dh asked if I put a cool rag over her forhead. I was going to, but she is sleeping. What is considered a high temp?

  • Pain in her stomach and a high fever could be an appendicitis. I would take her in.

  • first of all, don't ever give a feverish child a cool bath. i'd avoid baths altogether with a fever but if you must, lukewarm.

103.9 is dangerously high for a child that age. but, you said she just woke up and then went back to sleep and sleep can raise the fever a little (body works it off better when resting, hence higher fever) check again in another half hour to an hour and if it hasn't come down, go to the ER/urgent care
