  • Yes- it's a stool softener. I've taken it after having both girls due to having had episiotomies; I have exclusively breastfed both girls while taking it.

  • Is this a stool softener? Not sure. But look into taking Magnesium supplements if you're a bit constipated..... It worked great for me during pregnancy!

  • It's best to ask a Doctor or Pharmacist this question... since it's your kids health at steak you should always ask a confirmed medical professional.

  • Doc tors and pharmacists tend NOT to know, unfortunately. They use reference material that doesn't include breastfeeding moms. Sort of like how all early cardiac research only focused on MEN and not on women.

Google LACTMED. It's a database run by the National Institutes of Health... you don't GET more professional than that. I'll post their entry in the next reply.

  • Docusate is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and therefore the drug is unlikely to be found in the maternal serum or breastmilk. Laxatives that are completely unabsorbed may be preferred.

Infant Levels. Relevant published information was not found as of the revision date.

    Effects in Breastfed Infants:
In a randomized, blinded trial, 35 postpartum breastfeeding patients received a laxative containing docusate in a dose of 120 mg daily in addition to danthron 100 mg daily. One patient stated that diarrhea occurred in her breastfed infant. The diarrhea was most likely caused by the danthron.

  • Colace is no problem, but if you are concerned just drink prune juice every day. I was drinking prune juice by the quart to help.

Funny b/c my doc looks stuff up and can specifically reference BF mothers... same with all the Pharmacists I worked with. Maybe you need a new doctor/pharmacy??
