this is what I like about this site... different view points that make you think.
Im going to amend what I said. I gave up a good career almost 18 yrs ago to be a sahm. Some might look at that as giving up. I looked at it then and now as a change in priorieties. I strive to be the best mom I can, and to raise the best kids I can... THAT is my promotion.
I think if you choose to stay enlisted for a valid reason... then that is perfectly ok, understandable, and commendable to rearrange priorities.
If you choose to stay enlisted out of fear of failing, fear of new experiences, laziness (dont want to try or dont want the responsibility) or for any other non-valid reason... THEN I have an issue with it.
If you give it an honest 100% effort and can not reach the level of officer, and you do your personal best at the highest level you can achieve... THAT is respectable and honorable.

Well I grew up a navy brat so my point of view is from a child's point of view watching my father go up in rank, attending college, attending graduate school, and retiring as a lieutenant commander.... having enlisted because he didnt have the high school grades to be any better than a gas attendant. And through the navy got his masters in nuclear engineering at MIT. On a slide rule none the less.
So I can not see choosing enlistment over being an officer. To me an officer means that you have earned the promotion and have traveled through the ranks... or have come out of college. I would view someone who chose to stay enlisted as someone with out motivation, with out goals, with out direction... simply settling.
that view being from my personal experiance
