Breastfeeding and drinking alcohol......

How much of the alcohol really goes through the milk? I drank two liquor drinks last night. The baby was in bed when I got home but she woke to feed shortly after, she usually doesn't do that. I didn't think I would be feeding her until morning. I did feel a little tipsy when I fed her. Now I feel bad about it!!!!

  • You should have pumped and dumped or given her a bottle of breast milk pumped before you drank, or formula. However, if this is the only time you've done it and you only had 2 drinks, I doubt there's any damage done. Just plan more carefully next time you drink.

  • OMG,this is a pet peeve of mine. Why can't women just abstain from alcohol while they're breastfeeding?! It's not like you're being expected to give up water or something!
    Ok,rant over
    I second what vicesix said

does it really matter? "some" is something. "a little" is something.

next time you plan on drinking, have a backup supply of non-alcoholic breastmilk.

  • http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/alcohol.html I really like kellymom. It's a great resource for breastfeeding moms. I'm not going to lecture you. You feel bad enough already. But now you have the info you need, if you have a few drinks again.

  • I gotta tell you, you're very brave posting that here...
Anyway, what's done, it's done, there's no permanent damage done. From now on just plan ahead if you want a drink by pumping some breastmilk or abstain from alcohol.

  • I have drank a glass or two of wine and breastfed...my doctor said it was just fine and the baby wouldn't get any in her milk. (and I didn't even ask him..this was BEFORE I even had my baby that he told me this and he and his wife have 7 kids and he's been a doctor for 45 years) I don't know about if you are tipsy or not but I trust my doctor and my baby girl is just fine.

Ill take my down votes now :)

  • First of all, pumping and dumping does NOT get rid if alcohol. It had to metabolize out of the body. Second, breastfeeding moms can have alcohol, though you are not supposed to really have more then one and wait a couple of hours before nursing. That being said, you nursed, I assume you don't do this often so don't worry about it. Next time, have a just in case bottle pumped and ready or limit yourself to one. Breastfeeding moms do NOT have to give up everything, but we do have to limit ourselves at times. Don't beat yourself up!
