  • I don't know. I have such a mixed feeling on it. I think that the computer can be a fantastic tool for learning, but at the same time children need to learn the basics..looking up a word in a dictionary..going to a library and finding an encyclopedia...But on the other side, the computer offers so much more information and up to date information...but then again a lot of the information could be false...and yadda yadda. Grrr....too many pros and cons.

  • well my daughter is a junior this year. she had to start her senior paper this year and she has a lot of homework and essays that she does need the computer for. and she does use the school library but there is alot of imformation that if she can't find it in the library she has the computer. and they don't write their papers anymore alot of teachers want them typed or printed off. so yea it comes in handy

  • It's just a tool - like anything else. Doesn't make 'em any smarter to use it if they're doing it the wrong way.

As for if they "need them for school" - what grade? We have K and 1st under our belts only and for us, a computer was not needed. DD has been in computer club at school and is comfortable going online to Disney and Precious Girls.

I will be interested in hearing from moms of older kids!

  • YES YES YES. Teachers require stuff to be typed on a computer to be turned in. My mother always thought I could just use the library computers at school but then she didn't want to fool with having to let me stay after to type stuff and having to pick me up. Also, a certain amount of research can be done online for school projects. My nieces sometimes have homework that has to be done online!!! What do the kids do that don't have computers? I don't know, but YES you need a computer. You can get basic ones for as little as $400 now, and used ones are easy enough to come by. Try looking or posting a want ad on craigslist.

  • I think computers definitely help with school,. When I was in 5th grade we had to type up reports at home about amphibians and do reaserch. It was hard for me because we didnt have a computer so all my reasearch was done in a library (which isnt necessarily bad) but when I had to rewrite my paper a few times until I got the final draft I had to retype the entire thing every time on our type writer. Computers can really help give your child an edge and these days you can get them for free off freecycle or dirt cheap from places like salvation army. That said kids do NOT need a computer for myspace etc

  • My children have to have a computer for school. My oldest son needed one so much for his assignments that we went ahead and got him his own laptop. He has a lot of research he has to do, papers to write, PowerPoint presentations and a couple of his teachers have blogs for their classes that the students can get extra credit assignments from. For the past three years a memory stick has been a required school supply so he could take assignments from home and do them on his school computer.
