Why is it that in this country...

Where abrahamic religions have the most say currently in our laws and legislation does the catholic church cry for more and more things to go their way? Or do they get upset when they loose some of that control?

NOTE BEFORE ANY ONE GETS THEIR PANTIES IN A WAD!!! This is not an attack on catholics but a serious question I have been thinking about and trying to figure out. Most of our current laws are formed around abrhamic religions however that does not seem to be enough. Funny thing is those laws being centered around those religions is unconstitutional to begin with. Then on top of that when changes are attempted to be made to correct this injustice they are the biggest ones up in arms screaming about how unfair it is. I just don't get it.

  • I think what we're seeing is the upset of losing the control that was once previously held and no longer being held up in an "Entitled" status.

  • "Funny thing is those laws being centered around those religions is unconstitutional to begin with. "

I asked a question on here about whether or not the Constitutioin was outdated. I didn't get many responses that were opposite mine. I feel it is a subject that could be well debated since there are so many diverse opinions in this country on this subject.

I have a different view on this. The Constitution was intended for governing a "moral" people. Whose morals? The, as you call it , Abrahamic religions' morals. I simply mean their morals as in The Ten Commandments. While the founding fathers and writers of the Constitution empatically were against the federal government "establishes" a religion, there were also against the opression of religious expression and the taxing of citizens for things non-majority.

I feel the Catholic church is just reacting to being told to do things against their moral conscience.

  • I would prefer a specific rather than an in general.
    But here is my take.
I don't have the demographics wheel you all post so often of the breakdown of the percentages of the different religions. So I am going to go with 80% of the population claims to be christian (just guessing) So in this country (ideally ) majority rules. We vote and hopefully vote for people who make amendments to the constitution and other laws. So that would be 80 to 20 and the christians win the vote.

When you say the Catholic church are you meaning in Rome, or those residing in the US or??? If you mean those in the US the above example illistrates it best. We(hopefully) vote for what we believe in and protest that which we do not. Just becaust christians are in the majority (not Catholics as such) does not mean we should sit down and shut up. It means that we have the same rights to say that we do not like or think whatever is right

  • HHx5 Your reply leaves me a little confused it sounds like we agree in a sense however I am not sure please elaborate. As for the ten commandments in our laws actually they are not. Our laws come from the laws of the native Americans that were here before us granted revised a bit but still. Not one did they get OUT OF THE BIBLE. As did the way our government runs, etc. Against popular beliefs and theories of the time the native americans who were here when we came were way more civilized then us and lived in a form of democracy not dictatorship.

No, in this country the majority does not rule. That's why we are a republic instead of a democracy. Our system is specifically designed with checks and balances to prevent the majority from destroying the lives of those who disagree with them, simply because there are fewer. Those are also the reasons for the bill of rights.

  • @hot-mama: thanks. Do you have any articles I could read on this? or I'll google it when I get a chance as I've never heard this. I'll see if I can pull up some info on my reference to the Ten Commandments.
