All inclusive resorts

I saw an article on yahoo yesterday about the top 10 all inclusive resorts. My husband and I are planning on taking a vacation to an all inclusive resort (in about 2 years) but this got me thinking and researching. Just wondering if anyone has ever gone to one and has any good or bad experiences to share. When we go we will be leaving the kids with the grandparents for some much needed "us time".

  • We went to an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic. We did take the kids. But there are tons there that are adult only. You also have places like Club Med. You can also do a cruise, where the ship is your hotel and you move from port to port.

  • We have been to many all-inclusive resorts and here's what we have found ... if they are in the U.S., they are wonderful. If outside the U.S., they are absolutely awful! The customer service, the hospitality, etc. have been horrendous in the non-U.S. properties ... our food was basically thrown at us in the restaurants, there was a mistake re: our room and the management had no clue and went so far as to ask "what do you want us to do about it?" We felt more like inmates in a prison the way we were treated rather than actual paying guests. Never again!

  • I am not a fan of all-inclusives; I like to explore, eat "local", shop at markets, etc.
