  • No, I don't believe that it would help my child's grades. I think she would do well, or not well, whether I'm there or not.

  • Yes. I think it shows your child by your involvement that you value their schoolwork and think it is important. Generally children want to please their parents (at least to a point) so they place importance on it as well. Are there other ways to show kids that you think school is important? Of course, but volunteering is one way.

  • Yes but for a variety of reasons. This year I am not volunteering in her class because her teacher doesnt like parents in the class room (lol whatever). I have almost always been at the school so I feel lost this year. Anyway yes they would get better grades and I dont know if it is because I was there, or if it was because the teacher knew us better, or a combination?

  • There have been a lot of studies that show that parental involvement in the school is a huge indicator of academic success.

  • YES! First of all, I think it gives kids confidence when a parent participates in the classroom. It also gives the parent an opportunity to see how the teacher teaches, and to help the child with schoolwork at home.

Knowing the other kids in the classroom, and what's going on in the classroom helps a parent to know what to ask their child about each day after school, and can help in building classroom relationships.

Additionally, building a relationship with your child's teacher is always good. The teacher will be able to share with you challenges your child is having, where they are excelling, and offer ideas and opportunities for enrichment.

  • My 7 year old would do better because with me watching him he would be less likely to misbehave in the classroom.

  • Any volunteers in a classroom will benefit every child. I am a volunteer coordinator at a school. It is my job to get volunteers into the classroom. Not only does it help the child(ren) that the volunteers are helping, but it also helps the other children by having more one on one or small group time with the teacher.

I really wish I could have been more in my daughter's classroom (Special Needs) -but most of those years I was in the classroom myself teaching Bilingual/ESL.

Those of you that do volunteer in the classroom-Keep up the great work....You are making an awesome contribution,

  • I think others treat you differently including the teachers; staff and other parents which isn't right because if you can't volunteer they treat you like you are beneath them and won't talk to you or anything. I don't feel it affects the kids grades though either if you help your child at home and communicate with the teacher on what is going on with the child is what affects how well they do

  • Actually for my son, having me there would be more of a distraction. He would want my attention at all times and would be trying to show me his work every five seconds. I would love to volunteer and I probably will next year, but not in his class. I would go on field trips with his class though.
