  • It depends on the person, how much land they have, their financial ability to care for those animals, and things like that. I think if someone is a vet they might be able to handle more. I think if someone is barely making ends meet they should probably not have a pet at all. There are too many factors.
I live on a farm myself, and I have 3 outdoor dogs, 2 small indoor dogs. One of my indoor dogs is elderly and I dont expect her to last another year or two so she sleeps alot. I dont "count" her other then having to take her for check ups etc. My dd has a cat as well. There are 3 kids and me and dh at home, and we earn enough money to feed them, give them medical attention, and one on one attn. But not everyone in our situation could handle that many pets.It costs a lot of money to care for them, and time to make sure they are all happy.

  • it's like any other hoard..when what you are collecting starts to take up room and prevent or hinder normal daily activities. For animals its also the ability to feed them, care for them, and provide a humane sleeping space for them.

  • I currently have 157 animals, with more on the way. 27 hens, 4 daddy roos, 26 meat roos, 26 rabbits, 24 kits, 7 guineas, 11 guinea keets, 11 ducks, 4 geese, a donkey, 2 bottle baby bucklings and a young doe, 2 elderly house dogs, 1 bouncy puppy, 5 cats, 4 half grown kittens, and (sigh ... #$%#@$%#@) another pregnant cat that some a$$hat dumped who looks like she might be due this afternoon or yesterday. 5 of the rabbits are pregnant. 2 hens are sitting eggs. I will be getting 3 doelings in April, as well as 6 feeder piglets and 3 (two gilts and a boar) to raise for breeding.

You tell me if I'm a hoarder. Btw, we're retired, have a farm, we raise the bunnies for both our food and pet food. We raise the pigs for meat, the chickens for meat and eggs, and the goats are dairy goats. The dogs/cats were all strays or dumped ... including the elderly ones. I was a vet tech and do most of the vet care myself (what's allowed by law).

  • Farmlady, you are AWESOME (and lucky)!!! I would sooooooooo love to have a farm!

As for hoarding, if you even have ONE animal you can't take care of properly (feed, vet, spend time with), you are a hoarder (well, maybe not a hoarder, but you definitely should NOT have that pet)!

  • If you live on a farm (like Farmlady) then you are not a hoarder.

If you live in a regular-sized house on a regular-sized plot of land and you can't step anywhere without encountering an animal, then you are a hoarder.

  • It depends on if they are able to take care of them. If they have 4 dogs and they are all in terrible condition and the house is disgusting I would consider that a hoarder. if they have 15 well groomed, fed dogs in a clean environment I would consider that a crazy dog lover!

    agree with tashes also

  • It really depends on the person and the space. I know a women that has 18 cats. But she has an awesome set up. Most of her cats are the ones that no one would otherwise want because they are missing legs, have neurological problems, and whatever else. She takes awesome care of those cats though and her house is very clean.
I personally have 3 dogs and 4 cats and that is plenty for me. I once had 10 cats in my home after finding a litter of 6 kittens (only had 2 dogs at time) and that was to much for me. They were well cared for and my house is clean but i just did not have the space I really needed for that many. Now if I had the land and space in my home I would have horses and take in more fosters.

  • If you have so many that you can't properly care for them and this doesn't stop you from collecting/taking in/breeding more then you are a hoarder.
