Driving with my learner's permit

I am 22 years old, married with 2 kids but I just never got my license. I have had my learner's since I was 17 but my parents wouldn't let me get my license till after high school. I got pregnant soon after graduating and since I didn't even have a car, I couldn't justify spending the $220 it would cost to get my license. My DH works 16 hour shifts but only works 3 days a week and my mom lives 10 minutes away so it's never an issue of not being able to get somewhere. I live in a apartment complex that is right behind a grocery store. It is about a mile from my door and if I drive there, I never go on an actual road, I drive through the parking lot of the apartment complex and then directly into the store parking lot. Now I have been told you can drive unlicensed in a parking lot, just not on a road, is that true? I almost never do this but sometimes I have to like my DD's doctor will call in a prescription or my baby DD will run out of diapers. Since I have a 3 year old and a baby, it's too far to walk (I only have a single stroller and a mile is too far for the 3 year old to walk, plus it's really cold this time of year)

  • IDK - I see how it seems harmless enough, but I don't know about the legality of it. Even someone w/ temps has to have a licensed driver w/ them. And are you insured? I guess just be careful & when the weather warms up, maybe invest in a double stroller (even a nice used one from a resale shop), so you can walk there on nice days. :)

  • With a permit, you can legally drive with a licensed driver (over the age of 18, who has had a license for at least one year) in the car with you. If you drive alone, you will not just be driving without a license, you will be driving without insurance; both are really stupid things to do

  • If you get stopped with a learner's permit it is a ticktetable offense. Go get your driver's license. Unless you live in a big city with mass transit not having a driver's license is a way for your husband to have power over you. Women today need to be independent whether you are single or married. It is a much needed skill.

  • I am insured BTW. In my state once you are 18 you have to be insured even if you only have a learner's. And yes, it cost that much in mu county to get it but my cousin got his last month in another state and only paid $80
