Remember when one had to APPLY for a credit card...

...and get APPROVED?

Should they bring that back?

Considering how many people use credit cards like they're free money, and get themselves thousands of dollars in debt (that they cannot possibly repay).

Yes, less people would have and use credit cards, but it would be harder for folks to live above their means.

  • I wish they would make it so that if you were interested in getting a CC from a company you had to solicit them for the paperwork and mailings. I get several pre-approved letters in the mail every week and it's astounding how much junk and waste that adds up to. Not to mention a PITA for me since I have to go through it, pull out the page that has the 'pre-approval number' and shred anything with our names or information on it.

Not long ago DH got one of those in the mail and the envelope was not sealed. He called the company to make sure that nobody had tried to get a card in his name and they wouldn't even answer that question for him unless he tried to open an account (saying that this was the only way for them to verify that a card hadn't already been opened in his name). He didn't fall for it, but we are watching our credit on a consistent basis.

  • Name one credit card where you don't have to apply for it.

  • Yeah, you've always had to apply and get approved.

  • Just because you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail doesn't mean you are already approved and have the card. You still have to apply and be approved. Just like Jeremysmom said name on credit card that you don't have to apply for.

  • Those "Pre-approved" offers are nothing but sales tactics. You still have to apply and qualify for the card.

  • Creditors set their own standards; some creditors frankly don't care what discernible assets a person has they just give them lines of credit. What a person does with their line of credit is their business and responsibility. Many people just max out their line of credit WITHOUT thinking about it.

  • I used to get "pre-approved" cards in the mail all the time.

I haven't had one for years, I prefer to deal only in "real money".

  • when did that change? i see people all the time say they can't get a cc.
i've had two major cards for years..never owe more than $2000 (usually due to booking a vacation-stay), and always pay off in small amount of time.
it still comes down to personal responsibility..credit or no credit. people are too intent on using other people's monies or services to get them out of the whole they dug themselves into. medically-necessary debt is one thing...all other is purely personal irresponsibility to successfully navigate your own budget, wants vs. needs.
we live in a society where the Wants outweighs the Needs..and people allow themselves to go into needless debt to cover their Wants. then, when a real Need comes along and they can't afford it, they cry.
you can't blame the cc companies/banks,etc for something that is avoidable for each and every one of us. that's like saying a grown adult is overweight due to a spouse's baking.

  • So how are all these people with no discernible assets getting all these cards and racking up thousands and thousands of dollars in debt?
