Spin off from the milk Question: Why will schools not offer water as an option?

Why do the kids HAVE to drink milk? Why can they not have a milk or a small bottle of water? I mean I know you can send one and do some days... but why can they not have it as an option in the line? I know when I was little I HATED all milk. I would drink NOTHING because you had to be lactose intolerant with a Dr's note to be allowed to buy juice instead. I would have gladly drank water... I know my son would pick that over milk a lot of days as well.

  • Only the Vegans in my DD's school are allowed water in a bottle. No drinks are allowed to be sent unless you are a Vegan. SMH. Drives me nuts too!

  • Every school day I send a thermos bottle of water with my son to school. He's allowed to keep it at his desk so he can drink throughout the day. I do pack an organic milk for him to drink at lunch.

  • Well, in a way they do. All schools have water fountains so, a child would just have to bring a cup to school. I would assume that they don't offer bottled water to do the cost.

  • Bottled water cost money. School lunches are funded in large part thru the USDA and they wont pay for bottled water. It would be an expenditure the school would have to pay for....

  • At lunch time, it is a Federal Law that students are allowed to drink water from the water fountain. At my son's school and at the school I work at, the teachers encourage students to bring a refillable water bottle and allow them to refill it at certain times through out the day.
