How long are potatos good for?

there were no eyes or those growths coming off of them...but they taste real odd mashed...are they bad or do they need more butter??

  • It depends. I store mine in my pantry, and sometimes they stay for a month or more, other times only a week, sometimes I've them last only a couple of days. It really depends on how old they already were at the store. Did you see any black or brown spots when you were peeling and chunking them up? Did they smell funky, any soft or wet spots? If not, you could try adding more butter and see what happens.

  • Or if they were green they have gone bad with a chemical that is poisonous. If they were slimy or had brown in them they probably were bad. If they taste funny dump them. Maybe the are OK, but when in doubt, throw it out.

  • You may also be using a different variety of potato than you are used to. Different varieties taste different and are generally used for different purposes. For example, small red potatoes are great when roasted or boiled, but they make horrible mashed potatoes because they are too sticky and starchy when mashed. They take on a very smooth and shiny appearance and may seem runny.
