Why does naming children have to be so hard?

So, I'm 25 weeks along with a little girl, and we are stumped when it comes to names. I thought it would be easier with a girl, because my DH and I seemed to agree on more girl names when I was pregnant with our son (before we knew he was a boy obviously). My DH seems to be 'stuck' on the name Kaylie. I like that name, but it just doesn't seem/feel right (if that makes sense). Any name suggestions to kinda kick off our daughter's name would be great, because I'm drawing a blank.

  • Sorry you're having such a difficult time with your name selection. I actually found it easy when I was in the process of naming my girls. I names I chose had a little meaning behind them (not significant but meaning none the less). I liked names of places so for both of my girls first names I chose names of places, one was a city (London) and the other was a street (Madison). Middle names were a bit different. I chose Michaela because I loved the show Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and the main character's (Dr. Quinn) name was Michaela, so London Michaela. I also chose Lizbeth because I loved the name Elizabeth but wanted a spin on it so I dropped the E and A and just went with Lizbeth, so Madison Lizbeth. If I were to have another girl I would name her Ireland Rose.

My ques mostly came from names I've heard on TV shows and movies or just thinking of what I like and convincing dad to go along with it.

  • Get a baby name book. You go through the book and make a list of names you like, and he does the same. When you each have your lists sit down, exchange lists and start crossing off names you don't like or are not fond of. BUT, give the author of the list veto power to keep names they're really attached to. Eventually y'all should be able to come with a name (or names) that you both like. It worked for my husband and I with both our kids.

  • We went through my entire family and picked the letters that weren't used and went from there. Did the same thing for his family. We knew we wanted to tie her to me b/c ds has dh's first name as his middle name so our dd has my middle name b/c Ashley imo is kinda of hard to fit in as a middle name. I like different and unique, but not to different. Dh had stipulations no: food, colors, seasons, objects, days of the week, months. That made it hard, but easy :) We looked at eachothers family trees to see if we liked any of those names. Eventually we didn't pick one. She didn't get named until the day she was born. I hated it, but in the end it was what worked for us. As they were putting in the IV I was going through names and we picked Fiona Nicole, and you know what she is spunky and girlie and just a tiny little spitfire. I can't imagine calling her anything else. Here's some advice, don't tell anyone, ANYONE!

  • what name you pick. They will tear it apart, and you will go from loving it to second guessing yourself. What we did is we just gave a list of the few we were tossing around. Fiona wasn't even on the list, lol, that was a last minute choice. We got snarles and looks when we introduced her, but now they all love the name. So don't worry what other ppl think just name her what you want. and don't worry about having a name before hand you may change it. Ethan was going to be Issac, and Ashton was going to be Preston :D have fun and enjoy it. Best part is you can really mess with ppl about the name. I went around telling ppl the strangest things and names just to make it fun for me, lol.

  • Using the names of Mothers, grandmothers or Aunts can be a special way to honor a loved one. My sister named all three of her children for great grandparents.

  • We were thinking of naming her after my DH's grandmother who passed away a few years ago. Her name was Ellie...I'd thought about Ellie Josephine, but DH doesn't like that middle name. And I can't seem to think of anything that goes well with Ellie.

  • Oh, I like the classic Ellie much better than the trendy Kaylie!
Would your DH like Ellie Katherine (since he likes K names)?
