wall-e question concerning bnl guy

last night we watched wall-e. seen it before, but never really watched it closely, kwim? anyway when the pilot insists on knowing what a113 is, and otto shows him the message that says never to return to earth, what the heck is the bnl guy doing?! it looks like he's putting on a gas mask or something, but I can't find anything online pertaining to what it means. any thoughts?

  • My guess is an oxygen mask? Being that they are not so active (the humans) maybe he needed it?

  • he puts it onbecause that video they are wathing was recorded hundreds of years ago.. befor ethey went into space... right when the earth was getting so polluted that they could no longer live there. the BNL guy was still on earth when he recorded that... so when they were doen recording and were going to get on the ship he had to put that on to go outside. does this make sense?

  • I've reached websites that tried to explain it: people from the past were real. as the 700 odd years passed in space, the characters lost their "human-ness" and essentially became giant babies unable to walk or anything. This can be seen in the photos of past and present captains hanging on the wall, the gradual transformation. Animators thought they were being clever lol

  • i think he is trying to clean up the earth, but things are just so bad that they cant breathe from all the smog and crap that he has it on, then they decide to give up. you know they were only supposed to be on a "5 year cruise", so i think it was near the end of the 5 yrs.
My son loves this toon, we have redecorated his room to Wall-e, but i am starting to get sick of him lol

  • i agree- Its because the earth has become so polluted you cant breath the air-he says at the end of the message"Lets get the heck out of here", so hes leaving Earth and needs the mask when he goes outside to get in his ship. What confuses me is they show more than just the one(Axiom) ship leaving earth but only the axiom returns. What happened to the other ships and all the ppl, and if they became so lazy and couldn't walk and really never "noticed" other people how did they reproduce??
