how do you do it, for free?

  • I always used Yola site. You can build and host a website for free, but you will have a domain name such as something.yolasite.com I think you can also purchase a domain name without the .yolasite.com if you want too. But, other than that, it's free to build and host.

  • Tripod.com has a very easy interface for a beginner. You will have a tripod address until you be you own. It's free for a small amount of space, 20MB with limited functionality. If you want to hot link, make sure to learn the "a href" html tag when typing in a text box so that you can shorten the appearance of the link. As you advance, you can buy a domain address from tripod.
