Is my baby sick or is this normal?

She is 4 days old and we were sent home the next morning after the birth and were told she was perfectly healthy.
But she gets short of breath a lot, like after we feed her mostly, but she will breath short, fast breaths like she is struggling to breath.
Is this normal?

  • Yes, it is normal. Babies have irregular breathing patterns...

    From babycenter.com:

"Newborns do what's called periodic breathing: They breathe progressively more quickly and deeply, then more slowly and shallowly, then pause for up to 15 seconds, and then start up again with progressively deeper breaths. This is normal and will evolve into a more mature pattern of breathing, with occasional sighs, in the first few months of life."

  • She's fine. It's kind of like if you chug a full glass of water....at the end you have to breathe faster to catch your breath.

She's still working out the breathe-suck-swallow-breathe thing, and she should only do it for a short while.

They do have irregular breathing patterns, too...as mentioned by kynziesmom.

    She's fine, though.....
