Spelling test help! Second grade.

My Ds has done terrible on EVERY spelling test ALL year. We keep changing up how he studies and how much. We do the teacher assigned things ( copy words, write words 3 times, make words out of playdough, write word pyramids....) We have tried to teach him 'tricks' we found a website called spellingcity.com he plays with. We try verbal test. Flash cards.... OMG! He is still failing test. WE have been working on his words for 2 hours this afternoon both in games and test. He is still missing about 1/2 of them. any ideas? He has Asperger's if that means anything. I don't think it does.. I could be wrong.

  • I don't know very much about Asperger's, so sorry if this is a dumb answer, but is it possible he has some other learning disability? Like dyslexia maybe? I've never had to deal with it so I apologize in advance if I'm way off here.

  • Well the first thing would find a ONE method that he enjoys and stick with it! I'm sure keep changing things around isn't helping. There was another question earlier this week about spelling and I in it outline the steps I use with our spelling power program. I would try those steps and see if that helps.

  • If he has a disability, the school should be providing him with extra tutoring help. Request an IEP (individualized education plan) through the school, if you haven't already done so.

  • He has an IEP but since his reading is on target he gets no language arts accommodations. I would love to pick on method he loves but unfortunately he hates all of them. lol. He just hates spelling. I think he knows he has a hard time with it. He knows he has gotten a 'u' on every test and he no longer cares. I have considered dyslexia but since his reading and math are on target I am just no t sure that is it...

  • I don't have any advice other than to tell you, I know exactly how you feel. We are going through the exact same thing. Jeremy has his first spelling test tomorrow and despite the hours he has spent studying, he is not ready. I asked a similar question the other day and got lots of good advice. I will post the link.

  • I don't think Asperger's has anything to do with it either. My oldest has it and he's a great speller. My youngest is awful. He even says that spell check doesn't always knows what he's trying to spell. I wish I could help but if we're lucky my son memorizes the words enough to pass the test and then forgets them. In fact, we were so happy he had a C- on his report card, he had an F at progress reports. (it's so bad his teacher called the Friday before Christmas vacation to let us know he got a 98 on that weeks spelling test)

  • Here is the one thing my mom mad me do every night. I had to write my spelling words 10 times each every night and then 20 the night before the test. I never failed a single spelling test. I never got less than a 98 either. Does quizzing him help?
