Do you make your preschooler (3 - 4) clean the house?

I make my daughter (who will be 4 at the end of March...) help me clean the house. Of course I have her clean her own messes, but I have her help me with other things such as taking things upstairs or picking up trash or putting dirty dishes in the sink. I am just curious on how many others actually have their preschooler clean and if so, does your child like doing it? (My daughter loves to help!)

  • I have 3 1/2 yo who loves to help. She tells when it is time to clean her bathroom...lol. She helped me collect and sort the laundry today. She has just learned to fold wash clothes and shorts. She cleans her room, helps with her bathroom and helps with the living room. So yes, she does help with the cleaning.

  • My 4 year old loves to help me clean. The only things I ask from her is to clean her room after she has made a mess, put her clothes in the laundry room, pick up her own messes, and set the table. Those are her actual chores, but she also likes to help me do dishes, sweeps the floor (she has her own broom and dust pan which is adorable), and she also like to clean my walls and cabinets hahaha. She is very helpful which I love. I am sure that will change when she hits her teen years so, I had better enjoy it now! lol

  • I began having my kids to help as soon as they could walk. You start small by having them help pick up toys. By 4 my kids all cleaned their rooms, sorted their laundry on wash day, helped fold towels and matching socks. My GS is 9 in 2 weeks. She can make ramen with supervision. She just mastered the can opener. She and her 7 yr old brother bring trashcans in from the curb(on wheels). They take recycling from the kitchen to the garage. She restocks cups in bathrooms every Sunday. He makes sure there is extra TP in both bathrooms. They both love to help put the silverware away. She is learning how to put the pans away, the both help bring groceries in. We are a family everybody helps. I've known too many people who waited on thier kids hand and foot with no responsibilities. They turned out to be mouthy, disrespectful, lazy people.

  • Mine loves to help. He is 4. He helps with laundry(putting clothes in the washer, transfering them to the dryer. He likes to dust, and to fold. He helps with the dishes, except the time he "helped" daddy by putting in a big squeeze of Dawn dish soap while my husband's back was turned..He turned around closed it and started it. 10 mins or so later we had a kitchen floor full of soap suds...lol at least our floor was clean..and I got a picture of my son with the suds first.

He also will take disinfectant wipes or baby wipes and wipe down the bathroom sink on his own. He does the same thing to his room. He is kind of a clean freak like my husband lol.

  • Very wise mother! You are on the right track. Start young. Yes. Children should be trained early to help around the home. My son doesn't always enjoy helping me, but he will help. I believe girls are naturally more helpful at homemaking skills, though. : )

  • My 3 year old will help sometimes. I think she doesn't like it because DH doesn't make her pick up her toys or anything, and neither does my mom, so when I tell her to pick something up she either throws a fit or stomps around, etc. most of the time. Sometimes she seems happy to help, but not often.
