How long did it take you to learn to knit?

And did you learn from another person, self taught or by following instructions online?

I can crochet (not much though), but I've been interested in learning to knit.

  • I have been knitting for years. I really don't remember how I got started. It is pretty easy to learn, You Tube has tons of instructional videos. Start with a scarf, a thick wool and a size 10 needle. Join Raverly.com they have tons of free patterns and you can see comments and pics from other knitters how they did the pattern. Also there is a group (I know I said group) Knit & crochet Moms they are really helpful.

  • It took me no time at all! Someone showed me a few basic stitches, and off I went! Now, ask me how long it took me to knit WELL! LOL! That's yet to be determined. Be careful, its addictive! ;-)

  • I had a friend who taught me how to get started and I worked on it for about 2 hours before I started over ( I messed up and get adding stitches some how). The next day, I started over and got the hang of it.

  • I taught myself with a simple booklet. It didn't take long to figure it out. It is actually very relaxing and fun for me. Knitting was one thing I remembered my grandmother doing- she died when I was 5. that was what actually inspired me to teach myself.

  • As for the basics (knitting and purling), I learned in about half an hour. Other stitches and techniques I practice when I find patterns that use them with some cheap yarn I have around for that purpose. I learned on my own, mostly from a book, but eventually I used a few YouTube videos.

  • If you have a local knitting shop they can be very helpful. My shop has a group that meets once a week. All the women in the group are very helpful and have a variety of skills. The shop owner is wonderful about helping with yarns and patterns.
