Baby has a ear infection... did I cause it?

My 5 month old has an ear infection. Her nose is very congested and she is sneezing some. So I am wondering if maybe she got a cold and that caused the ear infection. I had her outside last Friday and it was a little chilly. She had a hat on so I thought she would be okay. I feel terrible!!!!!

  • You don't get sick from being exposed to cold. That is a myth. Your child got sick b/c they were exposed to a virus somewhere. The symptoms usually start within 72 hours of exposure. Your child has an ear infection b/c a babies Eustachian tubes are small and can't drain well especially when lying down.

  • At 5 months she could begin to be cutting teeth, which would cause the ear infection. My son had so many ear infections that they had to put tubes in his ears.

  • a cold is a virus. viruses are not caused by cold air.

if you want to blame yourself, formula fed babies are more likely to get ear infections than breastfed babies

  • rkoloms- I do breastfeed my baby and will do so for at LEAST the first year. I breastfed my first for 18 months. But are you seriously saying that a mother should blame herself for an ear infection if she formula feeds? That is wrong!

  • No you didnt cause this, most children will get an ear infection through their infancy/toddler years, some children are prone to having them with teething, my daughter had 2 ear infections before she was 1, both when she was having some intense teething.

  • rkoloms: WOW!! Way to make parents feel bad about their parenting CHOICES. I don't agree with you though. My friends daughter is the same age as my son, was breastfed and was sicker than my formula fed son was and still is. I know MORE breast fed kids that are sick all the time compared to formula fed kids. You learn a LOT working in a day care.

OP: It is NOT your fault your baby got sick. Kids get sick, it's a fact of life. My son's doctor used to tell me to make sure my son got fresh air, even when he had a cold or ear infection. As long as he didn't have a high fever, he needed fresh air. Fresh air helps get rid of germs.
