22 month old still on pacifier...HELP

So since he turned 18 months I've been trying to get my DS of his pacifier. During the day he doesn't use it as much, but at night he has too. Also during the day, he's always chewing on something. He'll be 2 soon , and I don't want him still on it. He'll be good for a few days and then he'll spend the weekends with my mom and she always has some stashed because he cries at night and she complains ...ugh its frustrating...any tips to get him off completely???

  • Personally, I would let him have it at night for a few more months and see. My 4th lost interest in his completely on his own around that time, just kinda overnight he stopped wanting it and would hold it rather than put it in his mouth and then stopped holding it. It was definitely the easiest way.
My oldest also took a paci and we "lost" his one night, he cried that night but then never asked for it again. You can just take it away at your house, stick to your guns and tell him he's a big boy and doesn't need one. I don't know what to do about your mom giving him one, except don't let him spend the weekend with her until/unless she agrees not to give it to him.

  • my DD really needed hers a night... we went to just at night and NEVER during the day. Then on her 3rd b-day we had the Binky Fairy come to take them to all the babies that need them. She left all her binky's in a basket and when she woke up it was full of a few toys... a new stuffy to hug, etc. So at that point she went cold turkey at night and it worked out well. She was at an age that we could tell her why she had to give them up.

  • After my daughter bit through the last "plug" and had a hissy fit in the car, we pulled over and pulled the one out of her baby brother's mouth and gave it to her. She then proceeded to flick it across the car yelling, "Baby". She never used it again after that.

The other idea I had is dip it in the same stuff that parents use to get their kids to stop sucking their thumbs. (You can get it at any pharmacy.) The taste is so nasty that they won't want to use it again.

  • My 3 YO just stopped using a pacifier two months ago. We started giving it to her less and less and replacing it with other things so that she hardly noticed the change until it was all gone.
