  • You really can't... it's natural for cats to want to be up off the floor

  • Since she's so young, it's a perfect time to get her used to nail trims....use regular human nail clippers and very time she attempts to scratch the couch, grab her and give her a little trim....jus take a tiny bit off...cats don't like their nails cut and that's how I taught our cats....on top of that, make it a habit to trim them once a week...that's how long it takes for the tips to sharpen....a couple things u can buy are "soft paws" which are rubber covers u put over their nails....also, at petsmart, you can buy double sided tape stuff that fits perfectly along the corners of the ouch..they are wide and long.

  • I have a friend who puts tin foil on the surfaces she wants to cats to avoid. They do not like it. She takes a large piece and crumples it just a little to make an odd shape (like it would look if you just took it off a 13x9 pan) and puts it on the chair/table/changing table. Over time she can take the tinfoil away. Maybe a scratching post would help with the other issue. GL

  • It's weird how cats are attracted to some things but not others, I have leather couches I thought the cats would tear up, but they aren't interested in them. I got a new chair made of fabric and my male cat immediately went to town on it, so I went to the local pet store and bled the salesman for info, he said my best bet was to buy a cat scratching pad and place it next to the chair, when the cat started in on the new chair to just pick him up and place him on the scratching pad instead, just divert his attention in a gentle manner, I only had to do that twice, now he doesn't scratch the chair anymore, he goes instead directly to the scratching pad. He added that scolding the cat or spraying him with water only makes the cat rebel when your back is turned. If they're given something more satisfying to play with, they'll lose interest in the furniture.

  • Get her something she CAN climb up on, and snuggle into, where she can be up high and keep an eye on things.
My friends put artificial grass on their furniture when they're not sitting on it, to keep the pets off. I don't know if this would keep her from scratching or climbing up on it though - just from laying down on it, since the grass is so scratchy and uncomfortable. (It's like squares of carpet, but it's plastic grass instead of carpet).
There are also sprays you can use that deter the cats from that piece of furniture.
The squirt gun is a good idea too. You will probably have to use a lot of ideas - I don' think there will be just one solution. I definitely think that you need to provide her with an alternative, whatever you decide to do to get her off the couch.
    Good luck :o)

  • Every time your cat scratches your sofa, the cat is just satisfying his natural instincts. As PP have said get him something to scratch and hone his nails, stretch its muscles and release its stress. :)
