My son will not eat!

He only weighs 28 lbs and is 26 months old. He hardly ever eats! Like 1 day a week he will eat one good meal and that's it! He eats raisins just about all day everyday off and on. He may eat a bite or two off of a pb&j sandwich. But I have to mak him eat anything! At supper i make him take atleast one bite of everything. And this morning I sliced an apple and give him peanut buteo to dip it in. He ate two small slices!

This is just examples. But it worries me so much bc he won't eat willingly! I have to make him an I know I don't need to do that but I just can't let him not eat anything all day long. I'm mainly worried bc he doesn't eat enough veggies!!

Is this normal or could something be wrong? I tell his dr but he just says all kids go through that stage. He's been doing this single a year! He gained 2 lbs the whole time he was 1!

  • Stop letting him snack between meals. Do not let him drink sugary drinks that includes juice. Drink only water and milk. Only time he eats is breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • This is normal, keep offering him the food and have him take a few bites of everything, that is a great idea. But other than that my dr said he will eat when he is hungry. My son always went in spurts a few weeks of not eating much then a few weeks of eating all day long. Try offering a variety of things besides the raisins.

Or when you make a sandwich use cookie cutter to make fun shapes, make the food silly for him. That might help.

But honestly, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • 28 lbs at 26 months is not underweight. As hard as it is, I wouldn't worry too much. I've heard that you can't look at a single day, but overall. Is what he's eating healthy? Because he's eating in little bits and pieces, maybe he's taking in more that you realize.

  • He is not underweight. My almost 28 month old ways 26 lbs. And, it's normal for toddlers not to eat much. If you are really considered you can give him pedisure to drink.

  • At 26 months and 28 lbs. he is just about the 50% for weight. He is absolutley fine. My son used to eat like a snake. He would have one big meal and pick at the next several meals until he had his next big meal. Just keep healthy choices around to snack on. My son loved to snack on cheese and apples.

  • My 30 month old weighs about 28lbs, and by every measure he's a happy, strong, healthy boy. I totally understand the fears moms have about their kids not eating, but it really sounds like you don't have much to worry about. You mentioned that you have to work to make him eat... if you've always done this, maybe he's just gotten used to the song and dance? Try this for a few days: put a variety of healthy foods in front of him on a regular scheduled basis (like breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks if you want) and let him handle the rest. DO NOT plead and fight to get him to eat! He might resist and expect you to sing and dance for him, but trust me he won't let himself starve. If you want to ease into it, go ahead and stick with a variety of healthy foods that he likes for the first few days. And keep a food journal of what he's eating for the first week so you can see that overall he is eating okay. Good luck!

  • Stop letting him snack and stick to a schedule of 3 meals and 2 snacks. It's easier to get my 22yo to eat when she isn't allowed to graze all day. It's hard to not let them when you feel they aren't eating enough, but he will not starve himself. He will eat when he's hungry.
