How do you get your preschooler to try new foods?

DD wasn't picky as a baby through about age 2. Then she started becoming really picky. Around the time she turned 3 in October, she was trying stuff, but over the past month or so it's a struggle to get her to eat at all. She just tosses her head to the side, or hides her face and says, "No" like I'm going to hold her down and shove food in her mouth. I'm thinking it's just a phase (that's what the doctor and nurses said at her last checkup), but it's so frustrating! And she HATES dips. It's like she's afraid of them. Any suggestions? I've tried cutting things into shapes, giving her new Dora utensils (she loves Dora), letting her watch shows where her favorite characters try new foods, putting out a plate of food she will eat with some new foods, etc.

  • probley just a stage she is going through. My girls would have days they would eat a ton of stuff and then others not so much. Could be she is constipated as well. Just keep trying but do not push things. Try to make things fun for her just with shapes, etc. Or can add things like mashed cauliflower to mashed pts, carrot cake, put fruit into smoothies, get some kids cookbooks and she want she might looks good to her which worked with my girls, have her help do some easy work when helping you cook, If worried can do those kid ensure drinks since still might be to young to chew some vitimins. Just hang in there.

  • I'd say just keep offering them. My DD was the same way... now at 7 she is into trying new things on occasion. I can't wait until my 5 yr old DS grows out of this phase!!

  • One way is to start eating from their plate & saying "yummy" when she refuses it. That sometimes makes my DDs annoyed and wanting their plates back. LOL

  • My DD isn't allowed the option of being picky. There is one food I know she won't touch so, I don't make it (tuna fish) more battles than I care to recall over this particular food. Tonight she decided that she didn't want to finish her dinner so she went to bed early. If we don't eat our meal we go hungry and only get water to drink until the next meal. I don't put up with picky eating. If it is a new food she has to have 5 bites before she can move onto something else on her plate. It is a compromise for us and I get what I want out of it b/c I only put enough of a new food for 5 bites on her plate. FYI mine is 3 1/2 yo.

  • You parents and putting up with picky eating. I never gave my girls a chance to be picky. they ate what I put in front of them. Or they did not eat tell the next meal. they only got water with their food. So they would not fill up on sweet liquids.
    Never had a picky eater.
