I just had my email hacked!!!

I was sitting down, relaxing when my phone began buzzing excessively. It was all email alerts. I checked it out and I was receiving about 15 messages about "message delivery failures". I quickly realized that my email address just sent out a bunch of spam! I jumped up and quickly ran a virus scan on my computer (but I do this daily and I NEVER open email from someone I can not identify) and I then changed my password on my email. I then sent out an email stating that wasn't me and my email was hacked.

Is there more I should do? I really don't understand how this happened. I don't leave my email open, I don't use public computers, I don't open links in emails if I don't know who it is from. I even have an anti keylogging software installed.

Any advice?

  • This happened to me a few months ago, except everytime I changed my password, the spammers would go in and change it and send out a bunch of emails again. Turns out I had a complicated "root kit" virus that my AVG couldn't remove. I had to have a professional clean my computer to get rid of it and it hasn't happened again since then.
Hopefully what you've done is sufficient...good luck!

  • Happened to me, too. I had to go change the password, and then all was good.

  • Happened to my friend then to my husband and then to me. Changing my password didn't help, deleting and making a new email didn't work, what worked is simply not having any contacts in your contacts list. It sucks, and I wish that whoever, whatever is hacking our emails could be held accountable!!
