  • I believe that part of the healthcare reform initiative allows for children to be on your insurance to age 22, regardless of school hours. Please don't quote me; my youngest stayed on mine when she was in college full time but I seem to recall our HR person telling me that the school was no longer a requirement.

  • So can he be added at any given time?? How do I go about getting the ball rolling on this? My hubs is a dick about my son, and when ds moved out to be w/ his dad (bc of my hubs) Hubs stopped insurance, which is total baloney!! So,since I am also on the insurance papers, I want to contact bcbs myself and put him on....will it be that easy??? I have been told it doesn't cost anything extra, but IDK. Sorry for all the questions, but I am really worried about ds, he's got a bleeding ulcer and I am so ready to leave my hubs over this problem. :(

  • I'm assuming that it is your husband's company that is handling the insurance? If so, contact their HR/Benefits department and ask them to add your son back on the policy. I do know that sometimes there are specific time periods when changes can be made but I'm not sure if that would apply here.

My concern is that your son is really ill and it may take a couple of weeks to get everything settled. If you do call, clarify the date that the insurance is effective then take your son THAT DAY to have him seen.

Another option would be to talk to your medical provider business office and let them know what is going on. They may work with you to see your son and then bill the insurance when it becomes effective.

  • I will give this a try, thanks soooo much Brawnwynll...You have really alleviated some of my anxiety. I am so worried that hubs is going to blow a gasket when I do that too, but son can't ignore med probs, and his real dad is now on disability.. Thanks!!!!!

  • The new age is 26. We got to add my daughter from Jan 1 until her birthday of last year. Everyone should have added their kids prior to Jan of 2012 (probably Oct 2011 paperwork). HR should have sent a letter about the new rules. Anybody with a kid under 26 should contact their HR today if they aren't covered under another plan regardless of school. It makes it easier to take a gap year now. I don't know if it will last because it is part of Obamacare and could go away, but you should all check it out.
