  • It's still an interesting question..I think a good deal of creativity comes from a spiritual place, not just imagination, true creativity is a gift, and often people who are more linear thinkers..intellectuals, don't get along very well with those with a more free spirited perception of things. That made sense in my head a second ago :-/ I need coffee.

  • Leonardo DiVinci was both creative and intelligent. I think they go hand in hand and not oppose each other. Just look at some of the greatest minds in history, like Albert Einstein, The Wright Bros., Frank Lloyd Wright and William Shakespeare.

  • Not at all. I know many people who have both of those qualities. :) Also, studies have shown that kids exposed to creative outlets in the arts help to increase their intelligence. :)

  • True creativity and academic intelligence are really two forms of intelligences. I have met many academically gifted people having hard time adjusting to real life. But, then there are people who claim themselves creative, but their creativity is really a narrowed form of artistic ability, which is really a one trick pony (not creativity).

  • Oh wow, I just came up with a song idea. What do you think what intelligence is if there is no fortitude toward surviving the real world?

I need to come up with a title for this.

  • No. My daughter tests in the "gifted range" on intelligence tests and she's extremely creative. My older son is also "gifted" but not creative. They both get the right answers for things, but often go about it in very different ways. It's very interesting seeing their thought processes!

  • A lot of people seem to equate "creativity" with "artistic."
I certainly see a lot of creativity in artistic people, but creativity extends into all areas of living, thinking, doing.
The "art spirit" (in the sense that American artist Robert Henri used the term) is not the sole province of art, but is a creative impulse or approach to living/doing that involves thinking freshly in the moment. Being creative in this sense isn't necessarily "doing something new or different," and what you do may look very much the same as other steps in the past, but it was chosen for its necessity or relevance right then. It wasn't "just done." This applies to a particular brush stroke (in a painting) or to a relational response, or to a way of doing something (like shooting a basket.) A great athlete or musician remembers in a bodily way everything previously learned/studied/done & makes use of it in the best way for THIS MOMENT, and

I think this is very much what "creativity" is about.
I think intelligence can enhance & support creativity. I think very intelligent people can be extremely creative (whether apparently "artistic" or not!) I don't think intelligence is necessary, in the sense that I think what is MORE definitive to "creativity" is the quality of being very present & able to think from experience so that you are making use of what you know, and doing it in a very present of-the-moment way so that it is fresh & relates to what is happening, or what is necessary. And this is possible for someone of average intelligence or even impaired intelligence.
I think intelligence might appear to be in "opposition" with creativity at times when a person has internalized messages about self-worth that have to do with performance and/or knowledge. This is not about intelligence actually interfering, but conditional self-esteem interfering.
