How much should a baby weigh at 3 weeks?

My son was 7lbs 15.5oz when he was born, he weighed 7lbs 8oz when we came home. At two weeks he weighed 9lbs 10oz, the next day he had went up to 9lbs 13oz. He goes to the doctor tomorrow and I'm anxious to see what he weighs now compared to 4 days ago. I don't want to feel like I'm overfeeding him, he hasn't thrown up at all since he was born so he's holding the milk, but just wondering if he should be gaining weight this rapidly...

  • Some babies gain very fast. Talk about all your concerns with the doctor.

  • Babies eat if they are hungry.... talk to your doc to be sure. I'd be more concerned about underfeeding.

  • I agree with whitepeppers and Crafty26. These are questions to ask the doctor. Get yourself either from the library or buy it , What to expect the first year ... by the same person who wrote What to expect when your expecting

  • all babies are different. My oldest and middle child gained weight rapidly, but my youngest is a little peanut and she eats all the time! she is 5 months old and weighs 14lbs and is 23 inches long and is seriously a little piggy. She was 7lbs 7oz at birth went home at 7lbs 5oz and has slowly gained weight since. You never know :) I wouldn't be worried about overfeeding. If baby is holding the milk and isn't throwing up, he is getting what he wants and needs. As Crafty said, I would only be concerned about underfeeding.

  • Every baby is different! If he pediatrician is concerned about it, he'll say something. If you're concerned, by all means, bring it up!

  • Don't worry about overfeeding a baby. That young, they should be eating "on demand and until satisfied" which basically translates to as much as it takes to satisfy them whenever they want it! All babies grow differently, and if you are nursing, you can expect big weight gain the first (give or take) 4 months. As long as the doctors see that the baby is growing and not losing weight, and has come back up over the birth weight, they will be happy!

  • Babies only eat when they are hungry unlike adults. At 19 days (3 days away from 3 weeks) old my daughter weighed 9 lbs 8 oz but she was 9 lbs 1 oz at birth so she didnt gain much. I dont have a closeness in age for my son to 3 weeks. I have 12 days old which he weighed 9 lbs 9.5 oz and 2 months old which he weighed 14 lbs 4 ounces. He was 9 lbs 6 oz at birth. He has been gaining 3 pounds every 2 months. At his 6 months check up he weighed 20 lbs 4 ounces and 2 weeks after that we took him to the doc for thrush and he had gained a pound and 5 ounces. Thats a lot in 2 weeks lol. I wouldnt worry about it but if your concerned talk to the doc about it.

  • Don't worry about the weight at a young age. Feeding is the proper tool and enough play time, He won't gain weight over the years.

  • He is bottle and breastfed, but I spoke to his doctor and told him how often and how much, which is breastmilk supplemented with 3oz every 2-3 hours, he said the amount is fine because he is growing quickly I should just try to get him to eat every 3 hours, but if he wants it(which he does) after 2 hours and he is showing no indication of being overfed(throwing up) then its fine, cuz he'll start pacing his feeds further apart as he gets older. Thanx everyone for ur comments and insight.
