5 Bumps

I encourage everyone...

... to watch "Oprah's Next Chapter" tonight. She visited a Jewish Hasidic family and I'm sure many misconceptions people have about the Orthodox way of life will be shown in a different light.
Here's a link with a video interview on her experience.

I hope to hear from the ladies who watch it! Hopefully it will inspire some of you to ask interesting and positive questions on the topic.

And in the interest of making this into a question... If you were invited to dine in an Orthodox house, would you go? What would be your expectations?

  • My niece and her husband are Orthodox and while I've only been to supper with them once it was a very enjoyable experience. I'm an anthropologist by training though, so interacting with groups I'm unfamiliar with is very intriguing to me.

  • I would love to go, as long as the family was tolerant and patient... I have no idea of the rituals involved and I wouldnt want to offend anyone so they'd have to stop and explain what is expected of me.... but it would be an experience Id love to have

  • I am friends with a couple for over 25 years. We are Catholic and they are Jewish. For the last 25 years they have spent every Christmas Eve at my house. We also share Passover & Chanukah dinner with them every year. Now that we both have grandchildren it is fun to see my grandson who is 6 ask about the different holidays. He is at the age where he is enjoying learning from this. Our families share in everything christenings and bris. They are truly part of our family.

  • I would definitely go and have. Then again, we are Conservative Jews with some definite Orthodox leanings.

  • I have not watched that, and I'm not sure I'll be able to. As for your question, I'm more than willing to try almost anything once. As long as I know what is expected of me, being an outsider, and there is understanding on both sides that I'm likely to screw SOMETHING up (I get clutzy when I'm nervous), I'd go to dinner. I would expect to be treated with dignity and respect, like any other human on this planet.
