What can I use to sweeten formula?

Before you tell me it's not needed please read why I ask.
The doctor recently told me to use rice cereal in her milk. Well I used to breast feed but it's not coming as much as I need it to. So we have to give her formula. Which she WILL not drink without just regular "sitter" aged cereal. I am worried that it may hurt her though she is doing good with it. The Rice cereal isn't sweet enough for her to take it. And she would rather starve than eat it it seems. Is there anything that I may add to each bottle every day that is safe?

  • Honestly, I can't think of anything I'd feel good about recommending. How old is she?

  • Honestly, no. There isn't. You may have to try a different formula to find one she'll take.

Do you mind if we take a closer look at the breastfeeding issue? According to your profile, baby is two months, and you are coming up on one of those times when your milk IS actually sufficient but external things like the feel of your breasts or baby's behavior may incorrectly lead you to believe you're not making enough. Dipe count is forever the only real indicator of supply. Six changes per day means you are making enough.

  • Their bodies will not let them starve. They are too young to override their natural instinct. If you sweeten now you'll be setting path to always do it baby's way. And a sweetening agent is no better than the cereal, which you are worried will hurt her tummy if I understand right?
When she is hungry, she will eat it. Formula seemed thicker to me than BM (thats not a fact, I am just saying thats how it seemed when I used it and BF. Maybe you are adding too much cereal, its too thick, and thats why she took it in BM but wont eat the formula with the cereal?

I wouldn't worry about the baby starving. I did the take it or leave it when I wanted to go back to the breast and eventually everything was fine. I would spend the worry on how to increase your supply. There are a lot of natural ways a dr may not suggest off the top of his head. So if you haven't googled, give it a try.

  • If you want to use formula you can make your own. Rice cereal isn't nutritious,l you can avoid that if you want.

  • I have to use the rice cereal per hospital cause her aspirating. She is almost 3 months. In 9 days.
For the breast feeding, the only thing I have is a breast pump and I'll be honest, I won't keep up with it to keep it coming. I tried oatmeal, but again that isn't something I will continue to do. Everyone has there things they start and never finish, so please no comment on that. If you have advice on other ways to keep breast milk or produce more, please say so. :)

I'm not sure if some of you get what I'm simply asking. And for those who did give advice thank you. I didn't think there was. Right now she is doing alright on the cereal, so I'm not too worried about it. And if she gets constipated, someone told us Karo Syrup works. So we're going to ask the doctor about that.

  • Crafty26: Because I can taste how bitter it is. And I know what BM taste like, and what formula taste with and without cereal and rice.
