  • He's not overweight. Why would your doctor say that? He's between the 20th and 50th percentile for his age, dependent upon his length.

  • He's not! Don't worry about what that doctor said. He's nuts. Plus, wait til he starts walking....all the "extra" weight will drop right off. Both him, and you with all the extra running/chasing you'll be doing!

  • Your doctor is an IDIOT!! At 4 months old my son was in 9-12 month clothing. I don't remember his weight, but he's almost always been a pound an inch. He's now 8.5, 4 foot 5 3/4 (measured yesterday), and 72 pounds. There is VERY little fat on him. He's just a really solid kid.

Found this height/weight percentile calculator and thought I'd share

Up until recently he's been in the 90+% for his height/weight. Now he's in the 85-90%. As long as your baby is proportional I wouldn't worry about it.

  • He said the words overweight? I think you need to be finding a new doctor, if he in fact said that.

  • I'm very surprised that your doctor told you your baby is overweight.
Don't worry...as long as you're not feeding your 4.5 month old pizza and McDonalds I think he'll be just fine :)
Like others have said, wait until he starts crawling and walking...he'll lose weight then. My DD was 27 lbs. at nine months and her doc was never concerned about her weight. When she started walking at about a year old she lost a few lbs. and has remained around the same weight since then.

  • It's more about his height:weight proportion. You can't tell if someone is overweight by just knowing their weight, just like adults - 135 lbs would be underweight for someone who is 6', but overweight for someone who is 5'!
The weight sounds really high to me, but that's because mine were all around 12 lbs at 6 months, but they were also very short so it was proportionate. But even considering his height, he does sound like his weight would be much higher on the % scale than his height, which would classify him as overweight. There isn't a whole lot you can do about babies though, except to make sure that he gets plenty of tummy time to burn some calories. Once he's more active he will likely slim right down.

  • The doctor was probably basing what he said on the ratio of length to weight and there IS a discrepancy. Check it out here:

His length is below 5th percentile and his weight is between 25 and 50th percentile. Also, no offence intended, but he may also have noted that your husband is overweight and wants to alert you to a family trend. I'm sure he had your best intentions at heart.
