How do you get paint off a rock fireplace?

And why would somebody paint rocks in their house? Lol- I mean it would be fine I guess if it looked good, but this fireplace goes up to the ceiling and somebody painted the rocks all white. It's gross. I like the natural look much better.

  • Ugh that would be a huge job. I'm assuming you could use paint thinner/remover and a wire brush since it's just rock but man; that'd take forever and your house would be a toxic waste zone while you were doing it.

    I shall Google for you.

  • Someone says to rent a small Vacu Blast (sand blaster) because that's the only way to get through the irregular features of the rock.  I guess it suctions the paint up as it blasts it off.  That'd be way better than turpentine.

  • I don't think you will be able to get it all off,, the rock is porous,, so more than likely it absorbed the white,, how about repainting it,, it would probably be easier to remove the stone, or cover it with some kind of plaster and concrete over it,,IDK,,

  • I just had an idea,, could you use river rock or those smooth decorative rocks and put them over the exisiting rock? It would give you a natural look, without having to sand blast the thing,, you might try a bit of paint remover in one spot and see what happens, I called my friend and IF they put sealer over the rock 1st you have a chance of it coming off.

  • Ugh, what a horrible thing to do to the next homeowner! Sandblasting is the only way to do it.

  • I would paint the rocks back to a natural color - you know gray with a little stippling of brown and black. I bet it could be done and look like a rock again.
