Embarrassing Catholic question

today we're touring and meeting the principal at a local catholic school for next fall our kids to start 1st and 2nd grade possibly. They'd be coming from a christian school. Sometimes before meetings, conferences, etc the teacher at their current school will lead a simple prayer beforehand, something "generic" christian based that I am both familiar with and comfortable. We aren't Catholic per se although I did attend it for a few years in elementary school, for the same reason my kid might now. It's simply the BEST school around with the BEST test scores. My Mom walked me thru the process a little since she did the same thing for me years ago and I feel much better knowing the catholic school doesn't care we aren't catholic and will love/accept our kids anyway, as long as they attend mass as part of their curriculum of course.

Can someone please give me a 90 second Catholic lesson? How would a prayer work? What could my kids except at Mass, as opposed to chapel at their current school? Any thing in particular I should know??

  • The instructors will help your children understand what is expected of them during Mass so don't fret too much about that. Maybe let them know beforehand that there is a bit of standing/sitting/standing/sitting during the service so that they know to expect it. They may be taught the sign of the cross; it really depends on the school.

  • do you know the sign of the cross? "In the name of the father (touch forehead), the son (touch chest/heart), and the holy spirit (touch both shoulders)" that is the biggest difference i think between catholic mass and regular christian church services. Some masses still do kneeling prayers too not just sitting/standing. I think you'll all be fine and your kids will get the hang of it in no time. I sometimes really wish there was a Catholic school in our area, we are NOT devout Catholics and hardly ever go to church but it is still the way both DH and I were raised and sometimes i feel really bad that we don't do enough for our kids in the church... but at the same time I want them to choose their own way when they are old enough to understand, kwim? :-/

  • The pray pretty much the same. Usually a Hail Mary or Our Father, and they do the sign of the cross. They also kneel a lot during mass. (I am giving you what I remember about Catholic church, but some things may have changed. I haven't gone to anything Catholic in many years.) Most young boys have a fun way of remembering the sign of the cross "spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch". (Please no one take offense to that, as it is a joke...I am not making fun of Catholics, my whole family excluding me is Catholic.)

  • You are getting some great explanations here.

    I am Roman Catholic.

I worked in Catholic schools for about 10 years, plus was a Music Minister by myself. I watch Daily Mass and attend on Sundays.

I can share this with you.
The Liturgy of the Word is the following-from the Catholic Bible
    First Reading: Old Testament
    Responsorial Psalm: Psalms
    Second Reading: New Testament
Gospel: From Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

My suggestion is the same as others: Follow the instructor and watch what others do.

I worked at three different Catholic schools.

The priest will bring it down to a child's level. He might even let kids participate in the sermon, and petitions.

  • In first and second grade they don't expect much of the kids. Just to sit and be quiet during Mass. It's also at this age when they start to teach the Catholic kids about the Mass. So your kids won't be to far behind them. So don't sweat it. they'll be fine.
