Opinions please.......car seat help

We want to buy a new carseat for our son because the one we are using is 4 years old and we used it with our daughter. We are looking at the 3 in 1 carseat that turns into a 5 point harness booster.

Has anyone used these? If so what do you think of them?
Oh and my son is almost 7 months and weighs about 22 pounds if that helps.

  • I think it is worth the money. I wish I would have gotten one of those, but I only got the one that goes from rear to front facing because it was on sale. You really end up saving the money because you don't have to keep buying a new one when they grow out of the old one.

  • I'll give you my "expert advice", as someone who has had a 3-in-1 and who also sells carseats.

The 3-in-1 is a great concept... but works for very few people. Since your son still has to be rear-facing, you really have to take the size of the carseat itself into consideration. When a 3-in-1 carseat is in the rear-facing position, it takes up a LOT of space. About twice as much as space as your infant carseat does, actually. So unless you're driving a mini van or an SUV (or even if you are), it most likely won't fit in your vehicle. This is something a LOT of people don't take into consideration, and you really have to. Because if it's too cramped in there, or is wedged in where it clearly doesn't fit, it can really compromise the safety of the child riding in the carseat. Like I said... it's a great concept, but doesn't work for a lot of people.

A 2-in-1 is a much better option for most people - something that is...

  • .... rear-facing and forward-facing, but doesn't go to the booster. That addition alone is what makes the carseat considerably taller, and less likely to fit in your vehicle.

If you can, go to a store where they will let you try the carseat displays in your vehicle. We do this at my store (babies r us) and it helps a lot of people make an educated choice.

  • Thank you so much. We plan to get it at babies r us because they have a bigger selection than most other stores do. So we will see if they will let us test it before we buy it. He's in a 2 in 1 right now because he grew out of the infant carrier once he reached 20 lbs. But that is great advice, thank you. And we'll definitely take that into consideration. I just want him to be rear facing as long as possible, so we might just end up getting a new 2 in 1 and when he gets big enough we'll get a 5 point harness booster seat.
