How often should one have a pap test?

I have had different doctors tell me differently so I am just wondering- I am 33 years old. One doctor says every year while another says every 3 years.... Any ideas???

  • Every 3 years unless you've had an abnormal result. Then it goes to once a year (or every 3/6 months depending on the results you got)

  • I get them every year. I have heard every 3 years and every year. I do it every year just to be on the safe side because my sister had to have precancerous cells removed from her cervix when she was 18, and if she didn't have an annual pap they wouldn't have caught it so early.

  • yearly I think. At least thats what I always have been told from my OB anyway. I get it done yearly since my mom had cervical cancer a couple years ago and had to have a full hystorectomy. She didn't have a pap in over 17 years before that

  • I have mine done yearly. My motto best to be safe than kicking myself in the ass for not having it done.

  • Guys, don't vote me down for accurate advice. The question was how often one "should" have a pap. You can get them as often as you want to; yearly is fine. However, AMA and CDC guidelines state that every three years is sufficient for sexually active women with a cervix who have never had an abnormal result.
